You have to drive from Las Cruces, NM to San Antonio, TX and . . .
this is some of what you play
My “Music for Bombing the Death Star” was so popular, I thought I’d do another music thread.
The drive from Las Cruces to San Antonio is about eight hours of nuthin’ but nuthin’. One of the more boring stretches in all of ‘Merica. I can’t fill the full eight hours for you—-after all, you do have to do some work. But here are a few songs to get you moving and headed in the right direction.
Getting out of the gate. It’s early. You don’t want to blast your ears off yet. Try the Dave Brubeck Quartet, “Bossa Nova USA”
Ok, some coffee has kicked in. Still not ready to pound on the steering wheel, though. Get some inspiration. “All Things New” by Stephen Curtis Chapman.
Almost there. Coffee is starting to work. Now it’s time for Clint Black E’electrified. “No Time to Kill.”
Put that donut in your mouth now. Howard Jones, “You Know I Love You, Don’t You?”
All right. You’re outside the city limits. Put it on cruise control 7.5 miles per hour over the speed limit. And “Turn Up the Radio” by Autograph. And I mean TURN. IT. UP.
Don’t get carried away yet. You’re still cruising. Watchin’ out for the po-po. Time for the Brothers Johnson and “Strawberry Letter # 23.”
Far enough out you can see the cops in any direction. Turn it up yet again. Yanni, “Standing In Motion” (Live) . And those drums better be rockin your windows.
Ditch the speed control. Nobody’s gonna touch ya now, playa! Put on Deep Purple “Highway Star.”
Yah, you’re safe. Even if they wanted to, they can’t catch you now. REO Speedwagon, “Roll with the Changes”.
Can’t wait now. Too much time on your hands. Styx, “Too Much Time on My Hands.”
My purist friends hate me for recommending this, but screw ‘em. Mashup “Blondie vs The Doors” (Rapture/Riders on the Storm)
Gee, didn’t notice those red lights did ya? Better try Journey, “Don’t Stop Believin’” while you decide whether to run or beg.
Suitably humbled, you set the speed control back to the limit and not one mile over it. You stare at the $200+ citation, and ratchet it down with “I Have Been There” by Mark Schultz.
After you’ve inserted some of your other tunes, you’re really draggin’, but can see your destination in the distance. Feels like you’ve been on that highway forever. “Six Days on the Road” by Sawyer Brown.
You’re there. Nothin’ feels better. Wind down, dream of that brewskie and a bed to Arlo Guthrie, “City of New Orleans.”
And get up tomorrow morning and do it again.

In memory of my long-time guitar player and brother in the Lord, John Cole Tatum.
I could have used your playlist driving home from DWF to San Diego straight through (except for a stop at Waffle House in AZ). We stayed overnight in Las Cruces on the way to Fort Worth.
It POURED BUCKETS going through El Paso! A trucker with Black Knight trucking got me through it though, bless his soul.
