What would a real Counterrevolution Look Like?
The Leftoids had their chance. Now we're coming to the plate.
In his latest column, Christopher Rufo says, correctly, it’s time for a counterrevolution. I agree. But I don’t think his choice of Richard Nixon as the forerunner of such a revolution is a good one.
Nixon created one of the biggest bureaucracies in our history that today impinges on every aspect of our lives and has infiltrated culture through “global warming,” namely the Environmental Protection Agency. “Tricky Dick” was a Keynesian in economics. After giving up on either monetarism or free market capitalism, he told Herbert Stein, his economics advisor, “I’m going to have to burn all my speeches.” Stein replied, “I am too.” Although Nixon did try to implement “revenue sharing” with states, the overall gist of his six years was to grow the federal government.
So what would a real counterrevolution look like?
First, we need to address the education system K-12 and then the universities. For K-12, the federal government should embrace parental choice vouchers as we have here in Arizona. Give the money to the parents, send them a bill. If they are directly paying for public schools—-given what they get in return—-they will soon pull out. As they have here in Arizona: we now have elementary schools in suburbs advertising for students! The homeschool conventions I attend have more than doubled in numbers of parents/families and vendors. This would be the single biggest blow to teachers’ unions and big-district/big-dollar school systems and the most important blow for true education.
When it comes to universities, there are two ways we can begin to rein them in, and again it comes down to money. If we take away their sources of sports funding, this would make a big dent in the slush funds universities have to disperse to lunatic faculty and idiot administrators. The way to do this is through an Justice Department agenda of getting the athletes paid. Not only would this cut into the universities funds, but it would elicit the support of athletes and their (mostly) lower income families in most major sports. Fundamentally, it is unfair for colleges to be the “farm team” of professional sports anyway.
Second, while no government funds should be involved, the federal government should do everything possible to encourage, incentivize, and motivate private donors to fund conservative/patriotic/honest culture in the form of graphic novels, streaming networks, distribution networks, movies, literature, and music. Return patrons of the arts to the private sector, while simultaneously removing all funding for NPR, National Endowment for the Arts, and other such state spending. The emphasis with these funders must be to not only get in once, but stay there. Commit long term to artists and/or projects.
Third, radically support conservative/alternative news outlets by steadfastly refusing to patronize the leftist outlets in any way, including interviews by candidates, politicians, artists, etc. Make no appearances there, give no interviews, publish no polls or “news” stories. This is not censorship. It is widely-agreed upon choice, as with the Bud Light boycott. We must de-legitimize the radical, communist, woke mobsters in the institutions at every level. Obviously this means fighting “DEI” movements in board rooms as gross human rights violations, which they are.
Fourth, immediately restore national statues, artwork, or other cultural symbols that radical groups find offensive. Do not engage in discussions of what these people did—-otherwise we would have to demand the statue of Lenin in Seattle or of Pancho Villa in Tucson. Again, do not operate out of a vein of censorship, but of what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
Finally, and obviously, at the federal level we must begin a total de-construction of as much bureaucracy in every part of the government as possible. I’ve written about this in the past. But the includes moving agencies and bureaus to middle America, terminating positions (not people, who will necessarily be out of jobs) and using Schedule F as much as possible.
It’s time for us to get in the game. (By the way, you can help with point number two below!)
