One of the darkest information holes in the universe right now is the Washington ComPost, where “democracy has died in its darkness.” But to be fair to the useless slitherjackets at the Compost, they are merely playing their Baghdad Bob parts of parroting inane and often flatly wrong (see Philip Bump's ongoing lies).
A much more sinister and destructive force is at work in the name of Wokeness, namely an Iron Curtain of disinformation and partial truths has descended across the entire earth, from climate change hoaxism to overall hyper-exaggeration. John Ioannidis has provided an excellent analysis of the forces (mostly bias of the researchers and pressure from funders, not to mention bias of the journals themselves) that contributes to the fact that most published research is wrong. Ioannidis found, for example, that researchers used small samples from which they made giant predictions, that they failed to even account for their own biases, and other issues.
We saw with the China Virus that the original China Virus scare-study by Neil Ferguson was actually worse than first thought. We have seen the CDC scrubbing vax-related side effects from the website. We have seen efforts to force a journal to retract damning research for the China Virus vax. The CDC/NIH launched a full assault on ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, as detailed in Robert Kennedy, Jr.’s book, The Real Anthony Fauci. We have seen the CDC claim that because it tested 50 people and none of the 50 died, the vax was "Safe and effective."
There are two big impacts of such lies, misrepresentations, and fact-juggling. The first is obvious: trust in doctors has fallen, precipitously. If a person cannot rely on his doctor to tell him the truth, both good and bad, what good is he? I can’t tell you how many people I know who would hear their doctor recommend the China Virus vax—-strenuously, some times—-and how many told the docs to pound sand. A second major development, however, and one equally distressing, is that research papers and patents are becoming far less disruptive. Despite an “exponential growth” of scientific papers and books, a study of 45 million papers showed that in fact progress is slowing because researchers are afraid of losing funding with challenging or contradictory papers.
A society that does not value the truth not only will get less of it in the here and now, but will see fewer scientific or even entrepreneurial breakthroughs because few will dare confront the “established” party line out of fear of being canceled or at the very least losing resources.
It’s a bleak reality.
