Looking at the 2022 Senate map, there are many blue seats where the DemoKKKrats are ensconced. But it wasn’t always that way. Indeed, over the years—-for whatever reason—-many very popular GOP governors have whiffed on the opportunity to run for these blue (and occasionally red) Senate seats.
But before we look at those, consider where Washington state would be had Dino Rossi not been cheated in 2004 in the governor’s race—-sound familiar?—-losing by a mere 126 votes. The majority of those (surprise) came in late after Rossi led the whole way. Had Rossi won and done a good job, and been reelected, he would have been in the middle of his second term when Patty Bin Laden Murry won. Instead, he lost to her by 5%.
(Thanks to “Freeper” fieldmarshaldj who assisted on this, as he has a historical mind for this stuff like no other). Let’s look at the very popular GOP governors who decided not to run for the sentate:
*Arizona: Jan Brewer declined to run in 2018 or 2020 against a then weak Enema or a dorknozzle, Mark Kelly. Brewer could have won either race.
*Arkansas: A popular Mike Huckabee in 2004 declined to run against Blanche Lincoln or in 2008 against Mark Pryor. Imagine if those guys had not had their years in the senate.
CT: Jodi Rell 2006 against Lieberman; 2010 for Dodd’s open seat as she retired that year or 2012 for Lieberman’s open seat.
IA: Terry Bransted could have defeated Tom (“Dungheap”) Harkin in any of the races from 1990-2008
ME: A big one, Paul LePage could have saved us from Angus King in 2018
MI: Rick Snyder could have run against Debbie StabenCow and passed in 2018.
NJ: Instead of blabbing about Donald Trump, Chris Christie could have run (and won) against Bob Menendez in 2012; BookerT&theMSGs in 2013 special or 2014; and again against Menendez in 2018. Don’t let these people make you think they are altruistic. People like Christie passed up likely victories in the Senate in hopes of being president.
NY: Believe it or not, as late as 2004 we could have had NY Republican senator. George Pataki, who had come off a good governor’s term, could have defeated SpewMore.
And, WI where Scott Walker would likely have beaten Tammy Baldwin.
Imagine a Senate with a Walker, Christie, Snyder, Brewer, and perhaps one or two of the others. Moreover, imagine what a culture of GOP winning and success in states such as RI, ME, CT or WA would have done to the party’s overall chances of other politicians stepping in. No, they wouldn’t all be MAGA-ites, but they would certainly be voting to override Biteme’s vetoes of potential GOP legislation looking ahead to 2022. Instead, these governors handed the DemoKKKrats 20 years worth of a head start in many states.
Sometimes maybe they ought to actually think like “public servants” and consider what they are saving us FROM as opposed to just what they want to accomplish.
