It’s easy to get caught up in initial reports from battlefields. Anyone old enough to remember the first weeks of Operation Iraqi Freedom would have thought the troops would be home in a month. Iraqi military forces collapsed and ran; American armor staged the “Thunder Run” right into the heart of Baghdad with tanks and armored personnel carriers, at the time defying all the rules of warfare.
