In 1984, with absolutely no classified clearance and using only public sources, Prof. Douglas Dalgleish of Arizona State University and I wrote a book called Trident, which was a history of the Trident submarine program. Toward the end we analyzed functions of the hull and system that went well beyond serving as a ballistic missile platform, including becoming a “pop up” Star Wars missile defense system/anti-missile system. At the time, of course, Star Wars was just a concept and even President Ronald Reagan thought it would take more than a decade to make functional.
