Of course it is impossible to prove the United States as a nation has been blessed by God. But the astounding number of “miracles” that have occurred over the nation’s history are, to my knowledge, unmatched in any other nation’s past.
When the Jamestown settlers were starving, they decided to leave. Literally, they were on board their ship and heading for the Atlantic when, at the mouth of the James River, they encountered . . . a resupply ship. They turned around and repopulated the first permanent colony in America.
Literally, had they left 30 minutes earlier they would not have seen the ship. If the resupply ship had encountered a storm or left 30 minutes later, it never would have seen the Jamestown settlers.
Later, when Plymouth was settled, the Pilgrims run into perhaps the only Indian on the entire continent who spoke English, Squanto.
During the American Revolution, at the Battle of Long Island, George Washington’s troops were badly defeated and had to retreat—-about 17,000 of them. Washington planned to ferry them across the East River . . . but the Royal Navy was easily within cannon range and would blow Washington’s rescue ships out of the water.
Until a fog rolled in. The British gunners couldn’t see, Washington saved his entire army.
Later in the War, Washington (at 6’5”) was on his big white horse . . . IN BETWEEN the two lines of Continental troops and redcoats. He waved his hat and shouted, “Parade with me, you fine fellows” when both armies opened fire. Despite being between two armies delivering full volleys at each other, neither Washington nor his horse were shot. But he did find musketball holes in his coat . . .?
Still later in the War, Washington, again on his white horse, was spotted by a British sniper. As the redcoat aimed, Washington turned and rode off. The soldier did not think it right to shoot him in the back.
At the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, Andrew Jackson had a solid position on one side of the Rodriquez Canal—-but his right, on the other side, was weak. The British planned to attack both simultaneously, but the attack on the weaker line started first. Then the troops didn’t know what to do when the Americans retreated. Instead of directing fire across the Canal, they stood there—-as the main body under Gen. Packenham had drawn up in the early morning fog. But just before they moved, the fog suddenly lifted and Jackson’s cannons tore them apart.
Jump ahead to World War II: at the decisive Battle of Midway, the U.S. only had three carriers to Japan’s four—-but neither side knew where the other was. Two miracles took place simultaneously. First, the Japanese scout plane that would head directly over the American carriers had a radio malfunction and was delayed a half hour; then when it did take off, it flew directly over the American carrier fleet in broad daylight with no clouds . . . and somehow didn’t see our ships. After he turned to return to his carrier, the pilot saw the fleet. His alert caused Admiral Nagumo to stop rearming his planes for an attack on the Midway base and to arm for sea attack, delaying the attack by another 45 minutes.
Meanwhile the second miracle happened. An American submarine had penetrated the Japanese screen and fired torpedoes at a carrier. They missed. As the sub ran for its life, a destroyer pursued it for miles. Finally thinking the sub gone, the destroyer turned to rejoin the fleet. The American carriers had already launched all their aircraft, but had yet to find the Japanese fleet. Almost out of fuel, they spotted the destroyer . . . and followed it to the fleet, where they found the four carriers reloading and refueling planes on deck with almost no air cover. It only took a handful of bombs to eliminate three of the four carriers, and a return attack the next day ended forever Japan’s ability to wage a war at sea.
Finally, in 2016, Hillary Clinton was poised to finish Obama’s legacy by essentially destroying America with progressive legislation and the naming of court picks. Her first selection would have been Merrick Garland, whose nomination was stalled by Mitch McConnell in the Senate. Every poll said she’d win. Every political prognosticator said she’d win. So she became lazy and did not even campaign in Wisconsin in the final month. Donald Trump won Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania by a razor thin margin of votes, stalling for four years the progressive/Marxist agenda.
Yes. I believe in God and I believe God put the USA here under His protection and grace, even when we screw it up.
